  1. Ooh, beautiful shot of the Outback! I wonder why they called the area "white man's hole in the ground"?

  2. Fabulous photo - I too am interested in the name 'white man's hole in the ground'. I do know that houses are built into the ground but surely the aboriginal name came before white settlers?

  3. Floridagirl,
    Marilyn,
thank you for your visit. Coober Pedy was established with the white man arriving to dig for opals. There are many underground holes to dig for opals. One hole next to the other, it is quite dangerous, never walk backwards because they are very deep. Above ground it looks like the Pyramids. That is why the aboriginal people called this place "white man's hole in the ground."

  4. T, your photo sent me searching to read about this place, an amazing and vastly expansive territory, but one in which I simply cannot imagine living. Rugged beauty and my guess is there are some amazing skyscapes with sun and moon.

  5. Diana, thank you for your interest. I love the colours of the desert. I could not live in Coober Pedy, because everything is raw and red and the town is never finished, everywhere are huge earth mounts because many people live underground because of the heat.

  9. Thank you for the added information in the comments. I have seen photos of some of the homes underground but didn't know this is where it is. NOW I will Google it to see exactly where it is.

  16. The blue of the sky is a remarkable contrast to the land. Great photo of a "hole in the ground". I find that interesting!

  17. Coober Pedy is a beautiful place that I'd like to visit. I have some opals which I purchase at Perth airport. They are special stones. I didn't know there are red desserts!

  18. Hi Titania! I needed to check several of your blogs to find where you posted recently. Thanks for the comment! I've been traveling to the beautiful Amalfi coast, Italy. I published three posts after that, and could post for the whole year, since I took 12oo pictures.
The sky in your photo is fantastic! With rainy season approaching, I will need to look at such images daily!

  20. Hello Titania! An amazing landscape indeed: it reminds me a bit of the moon, except for the sky which on the moon is always completely black.
    Happy Sunday!

  21. Tonight, I watched on our news, there is the place you posted in inner Australia where there is a gigantic lake, and there are all sorts of animals and birds.

Lake Eyre, the largest ephemeral lake in the world. For the first time in decades this massive salt lake basin is now full of water. Floods from the north and rain from above have given birth to spectacular wild life in the middle of the desert and through tourism, the lake is providing welcome economic benefits to surrounding towns.

One such town is Coober Pedy

    This is just so fantastic.
